Marketing On Twitch: How You Can Market On One Of The Newest Platforms On the Internet

Ever wonder what kids these days are watching?

It was on a normal Sunday that I saw that my kids were watching a video on their Ipad; they were busy trying to watch someone playing Minecraft. Instead of playing the copy of the very same game on their ps4!

It was fascinating, children and teenagers would rather spend time watching people a game, than to play the very same game themselves now.

And that is how I was introduced to Twitch.tv.

The leading streaming service for gamers.

Twitch is a streaming service that you can use, it works similarly to YouTube. To get started recording on Twitch, all you need is a PC, Xbox one, or PS4 to get started.

For the two consoles in the list, streaming is extremely easy. All you have to do is to download the app, login, and the app will do the rest for you. It is a simple, nearly one click process to get your content up on a stream on Twitch on your game consoles.

However, it is slightly more difficult for you to stream your games on PC, you will have to use a reasonably powerful PC, have a capture card/ Nvidia Shadowplay compatible graphics card, and the knowledge to set up your streaming software.

But for this article, we will be looking at the methods that you can use to advertise on Twitch.

Why Twitch?

Twitch has an incredible, engaged, and youthful user base. The age of the average Twitch streamer is between 21-35 years old. With a mostly male demographic using their services to stream their content.

Gaming Bias

The bulk of the content that is hosted on Twitch would be mostly gaming related, or games.

The service is geared towards a gaming community, and has various memes and inside jokes that the general public wouldn’t understand, even if they happen to be in that very demographic. Niche products that are gaming related, or cater towards the demographic in this age range would have an easy time marketing on Twitch.

High Traffic Quality

The design of Twitch, as a platform, encourages it’s users to be active, people are interacting with each other constantly in the Chat Room, and they are able to interact with the host of the stream as well. The community forms a hivemind social network, as a large number of users communicate in the chat room at a very rapid pace.

Channels like “Twitch Plays Pokemon” allow the chat room to control a full game of Pokemon, for example.  And some interactive games, like Saltybet, which is a virtual currency betting game have been made possible with Twitch.

So how can you market on Twitch?

There are many ways of marketing directly and indirectly on Twitch, and we will cover them here.

Marketing with Twitch

The easiest way to market on Twitch would be through Twitch themselves. they do offer a variety of static and dynamic visual ads. One of the main issues with using banner and video ads on Twitch is the presence of Adblock. Adblock is able to prevent your ads from reaching the traffic that it should be reaching.

Influencer Marketing

One of the next options is Influencer marketing, you can directly contact the company, organization or individual and ask for them to insert a promoted segment for you, in exchange, you offer them some form of sponsorship.

Companies like Machinima, or various smaller gaming teams will usually take a sponsorship from gaming related sponsors, but it is possible for such companies to take sponsorships from bigger brands like Levis, or promote other individual products and services.

Content Syndicate

Smaller channels are usually unable to take a sponsorship due to their lack of viewers, or some other inability to meet their possible prospective sponsor demands.

Commonly seen are teams, or groups of gamers that have banded together into a single channel in order to consolidate themselves for either commercial reasons, or competitive ones. Advertising with such syndicates would be easier, as you would only have to interact with one representative, instead of multiple individuals in order to access the same amount of traffic.

Content Creation

For some marketers, it would be easier to create their own content on Twitch themselves. While this is usually the case for larger groups, it is possible for anyone to be able to make the content that they would want to, especially if they own a PC.

If you have a reasonably powerful computer, you can use streaming software like OBS to feed footage from your camera, and your screen to Twitch. While Twitch is mostly for gamers, there are all forms of content on Twitch as well.

Here are just two examples of the kind of content you can find on Twitch.

So now that you know how to make advertise on the internet, you can start using Twitch to generate the traffic that you need.

You could even use Twitch as source of traffic to your sales or squeeze page. By making your own content, and placing your links, you can get people interested in your product or service without spending any money on traffic generation.

I hope that this article helps you get  started with marketing on Twitch, good luck!
